Prevention of Blindness Week (1st–7th April 2025)

Sultanpur, April 1, 2025:
The Prevention of Blindness Week was inaugurated today at Autonomous State Medical College, Sultanpur, under the joint efforts of the Departments of Pharmacology, Ophthalmology, Anatomy, and Community Medicine. The event aims to promote awareness about avoidable blindness, the importance of early detection, and the role of rational prescribing in preserving vision.

The program was graced by the presence of respected Principal, Dr. Salil Srivastava who emphasized the importance of blindness awareness among medicos. He said, “As future healthcare providers, our students must not only diagnose and treat but also educate society. Awareness is the first step in preventing blindness, especially when it’s avoidable through timely action and informed choices.”

Dr. Swati Rai, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, enlightened the audience on drug-induced ocular toxicity. She said, “Drugs like chloroquine (used in malaria), ethambutol (used in TB), and linezolid (an antibiotic) can cause irreversible damage to the eyes. Rational use, regular monitoring, and pharmacovigilance are crucial in preventing such complications.”

Dr. Anita Maurya, Assistant Professor of Community Medicine, highlighted that community participation and health education are key to controlling avoidable blindness. She spoke about national programs and the importance of screening and early intervention, especially in children and vulnerable populations.

Dr surendra, Assistant Professor Anatomy also highlighted that cornea donation is important and all should actively donate who are above 18 year.Also say about night blindness and other cause of Blindness.

Associate Professor Dr. P.P. Dubey appreciated the interdisciplinary collaboration and encouraged students to take active part in social health initiatives.

The event was attended by Dr. Anand, Dr. Payal, Dr. Anshuman, Dr. Deepak, medical students and faculty members from various departments. Students participated enthusiastically, taking a pledge to spread awareness about eye health, promote rational drug use, and encourage eye donation.
